Staithes Harbour Sunrise

A stunning sunrise over Staithes Harbour. This photograph was taken from Cowbar Bank; just down from “Old Jacks house” from the children’s TV show. Once over Staithes harbour would have been packed with traditional Yorkshire cobbles; it was for a time the 6th busiest fishing village in England. Now only a few boats remain in Staithes harbour and a few cobbles are brought up Roxby Beck. The dominant industry in Staithes now is tourism. Thousands attend the Lifeboat Weekend and Heritage Weekend ; that are held annually in the village. Many of the cottages in Staithes have been converted into holiday homes. A great location for spending time on the Coast due in part to the proximity of Whitby; and been located within The North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Staithes also plays a part in the Captain Cook story; working here for a while when he left Aireyholm Farm in Great Ayton. It is reputed that whilst watching out over this exact harbour; that James Cook developed a passion for the sea.
