Saltwick Bay Scar

As the sun sets over the Yorkshire Coast the retreating North sea reveals the scar at Saltwick Bay of few miles south of the fishing port of Whitby. This is part of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast or Fossil Coast and is mostly located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The bay here is over looked by the Cleveland Way which passes on the cliffs overhead. Apart from the Ammonites shells and reptiles the cliffs contain the famous Whitby Jet. A black mineraloid it is the remains of monkey puzzle tree and has been used to craft beads and other decorative items since the Bronze Age and was the favoured jewellery worn by Queen Victoria in her mourning of her husband Prince Albert.
