Esk Valley Fire On The Moor

As the sun sets over the North Yorkshire Moors a beautiful sky lights up this extraordinary landscape. Britain has 75% of the worlds moorland with the largest unbroken area of moor right here in North Yorkshire. The moor not only attracts tourist to Yorkshire but provides jobs for local people. Moor keepers maintain and protect this special environment, heather burning is done annually in patches which maintains a perfect habitat for ground nesting birds like the Merlin, Golden Plover, Lapwing and Curlew. Because the Moor is so rare and plays a massive roll providing breeding grounds and vegetation to these international important birds, it is protected nationally and by European law. The moor has also been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
