Fire On The Danby Moor

A winter sunset in the North Yorkshire Moors not far from the rural village of Danby. Fires rage in the Esk Valley and although this may seem destructive, the fires are deliberate and are done as part of a cycle. Despite the moors appearance it is not a genuine natural landscape. The moors have been managed for centuries burning large areas in rotation so that Grouse and other birds can thrive, fresh shoots of Heather provide food and the taller Heather makes an ideal nesting ground. The moor sheep even play an unlikely role in providing for the birds, with the clear patches where they lay in the snow allowing the moors birds access to the plants for food.
