Whitby East Extension

Sunrise on the Yorkshire Coast, Whitby’s East Extension is over looked by the Whitby Abbey. The original abbey was was built as an act of thanks giving by the King of Northumbria Oswy for defeating the pagan king of Mercia Penda. Prospering through the years the double Anglo Saxon abbey became a centre of learning and home to England’s oldest poet Caedmon and the royal nunnery for the Kingdom of Deira and burial place for the royal family.
But darker times were to follow and in the year 867 Ingwar and Ubba the leaders of a civilisation from Denmark known as the Vikings crossed the North Sea and sacked the town of streanoehealh and its abbey at whats Known today as Whitby.
