Khyber Pass Whitby

A winters dawn at Khyber Pass, Whitby. A very popular Yorkshire canvas print with a view looking across the bandstand and over the River Esk and onto the famous 199 steps with St. Hilda’s Church and the morning glow illuminating Whitby Abbey. I was also pleased when this image was used for the Whitby Advertisers first edition of 2017.
This location is also very popular with tourists to Whitby, many staying in the Bay Royal Hotel adjacent and separated by the Whalebones which are a tribute to Whitby’s whaling and maritime heritage. Close also is the statue of Captain James Cook, who learned seafaring here and in the village of staithes a few miles North on the Coast. Incidentally all the ships used by Cook on his epic voyages, Discovery, Adventure, Resolution and Endeavour were built in Whitby boat yards which utilised the high quality English Oak and made whitby the 3rd highest boat producer in England which is an incredible feat for a small town on the Yorkshire Coast.
