Whitby Abbey
Whitby, which lies at the mouth of the River Esk, is synonymous with Bram Stoker who took inspiration from the town for his epic novel ‘Dracula’. The atmospheric Whitby Abbey, once home to St. Hilda, dominates the East Cliff whilst the ‘Whale Jaw Bones’ atop of the West Cliff pays homage to the town’s whaling history. Originally Whitby lay within the Kingdom of Northumbria and was the site of an Anglo-Saxon abbey which was founded in 657 A.D. In 664 A.D. the abbey became the setting for the Synod of Whitby which was an important meeting, chaired by the Northumbrian king, to decide if the people should follow the Celtic or Roman teachings of Christianity; St Aiden’s Celtic Christianity was abandoned in favour of Roman Catholicism. The abbey was destroyed during the Viking raids in 870 A.D. and later rebuilt by the Normans who dedicated the abbey to St Hilda a Northumbrian princess, who became the first abbess. Whitby derives its name from the Viking Hviteby meaning ‘the White Town’. The names of many villages in the Esk valley are said to have Viking names, Eskdale, Ainthorpe, Danby and Goathland being examples.

All canvas prints bought from us are made using the Epson 9900. Its 11 ink printer system maximises the ground-breaking Epson Ultra Chrome HDR Inks with their massive colour gamut and DMax.

Colours are exceptionally vibrant with outstanding realism and have a lightfast rating of over 200 years. Our canvases are printed at a staggering 720 x 1440 resolution, which we could not take full advantage of using a canvas of mediocre quality. That is why the canvas we use is imported from the USA, for its superior print quality and longevity. It is a 450 GSM matt poly-cotton canvas that is OBA free and will not yellow overtime like an inferior canvas, it is also archival certified for over 100 years (click here for certificate).

Once printed our canvases are given a day for the ink to cure, it is then protected by a revolutionary Matt varnish to help protect against UV light scuffs and abrasion. Once dry the canvas is carefully hand stretched around a 38mm thick kiln dried solid pine frame and then tensioned using wedges. Finally the back is sealed and a stylish bronze hanger is fitted for ease of hanging.

Mounted photos are produced on our large format Epson 9900 printer which takes full advantage of the Epson Ultra Chrome HDR Inks.
